The Commission of Constitutional Points and Citizen Initiatives of the Congress of Mexico City formally approved a citizen initiative to reform the legislation and prohibit bullfighting and other spectacles involving animals. This action was carried out in accordance with the Law on Citizen Participation and after the validation of signatures by the Electoral Institute of CDMX.
Gicela Álvarez Camacho, president of the Commission, indicated that the legal provisions to admit the proposal are being met and that a detailed analysis will proceed. Additionally, legal and institutional mechanisms will be implemented to ensure that representatives of the involved civil organizations are heard during the discussion process.
After the initial approval of the citizen initiative, the Commission will call on interested groups to present their arguments before issuing a ruling. It is relevant to mention that a similar proposal had been presented in the previous legislature but was halted due to a lack of internal consensus within Morena.
The approved initiative aims to prohibit public and private spectacles that include animals, such as bullfighting, novice bullfighting, horseback bullfighting, testing, and cockfighting. This step represents progress in addressing citizen demands and the protection of animal rights in the city. However, the issue still generates intense debate between those who defend traditions and those who advocate for the abolition of these spectacles.
